How to get out of a negative headspace aka how to stop spiralling
Absolutely no one is exempt from negative thinking, it is something that we will all continue to experience in life. But there is one difference when it comes to people that can get out of a negative headspace quicker than others and that is mindfulness. Being aware of your negative thoughts is actually a good thing because once you identify a problem it means you can do something about it.
Imagine if you didn’t even realise how negatively you were thinking how crazy your life could potentially end up! Being aware of your thoughts and feelings is a good thing because it gives you the opportunity to do something about it. So on those days where you feel like you’re constantly being a negative Nelly, guess what? Your brain is giving you the opportunity to change your headspace.
I’ve noticed that some of the main triggers that can cause negative thought spiralling include:
Changes in your environment/routine
Not taking care of yourself, I,e not putting yourself as a priority
Revisiting old wounds/stories/life events
Ok, so now we’ve identified what could be the cause of your spiralling, it’s time to focus on what YOU can do to get out of that negative headspace:
Do something that you enjoy
A lot of the time we feel a sense of unhappiness because we aren’t doing enough things that fulfil us. This can obviously vary from person to person, so I want you to think long and hard about the things in life that genuinely bring you joy. For me, if I’m feeling down I like to listen to my favourite music albums. Most of my favourite music has some kind of nostalgic feel to it; whether it reminds me of an amazing time in my life, or a specific event, it helps to create good feelings within me. For you this could be painting, exercising or cooking your favourite meal. Whatever it is, do more of it. It is guaranteed to make you feel better.
2. Journal, journal, journal
Sometimes we overthink things which then leads to spiralling because we are basing everything on how we are feeling at that moment. Emotions are fleeting, and so you could have a negative rush of thoughts that you could look at tomorrow and realise it actually wasn’t as bad as you thought it was. Journalling is a great way to get all your feelings out and actually help you process them from a place of focus. Sometimes all we need to do is just get our thoughts out of our heads and onto paper. I love journal because I am more attentive with my emotions and ask myself important questions that I probably wouldn’t be able to answer if I just stayed in my feelings spirally out of control. One of the best ways to get a hold of your emotions is to not let them get the best of you and by journalling you give yourself the opportunity to feel and release them under a more focused mind.
3. Treat yourself like number 1
Have you noticed that when you stop focusing on yourself and your needs you tend to spiral and have negative thoughts a lot more? That is because you are not focusing on self-prioritisation. Now I’m not saying you should start being a selfish cow and literally forget about any and everyone else, but YOU should be your main priority. Prioritising yourself not only leads you to better mental health, but it makes you more likely to get your manifestations because it allows you to have clarity and this is key if you want your manifestations to come to fruition. In your reality you’re number 1, you’re the best, you’re the priority…so start acting like it! Once you become the priority in your life you will start to attract all of the things you want. So get focused and prepare to receive!
So the next time you find yourself spiralling into a negative headspace, try one or even all of these tips and I guarantee you will feel a lot better, and it’ll help you get back on track with manifesting your desires!
